I went through a lot of trouble learning how to do it.  I searched endlessly for training and got pounded by scam after scam.  But I’m happy to say that I’m now an official Affiliate Marketer, I’m successful, and I absolutely love my job.  So now I’m sharing what I’ve learned because I want to save others all the trouble I went through.  Affiliate marketing for beginners doesn’t have to entail a years-long struggle.  Just keep reading, and let me show you the RIGHT way.

Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

I’ve discovered that yes, you really can be successful at affiliate marketing, work at home in your pj’s, set your own schedule, and be your own boss.  And it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, and you don’t have to become a cheesy salesperson or rip people off to be successful.

In this article, I’ll be giving you an overview of the affiliate marketing process so you can start to get an idea about how affiliate marketing works.  I’ll also give you an example so you can see what I’m talking about.  Don’t worry about feeling overwhelmed during this article.  At the end, I’ll give you an outline you can start with right away.

Ok, let’s get started!

5 Steps to Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing for BeginnersStep 1:   Pick a topic

It’s important to not only pick a topic that will make money, but also one that you’re personally interested in.  If it’s something you like it’ll make your job much more enjoyable.  You should also consider whether there would be several products associated with this topic that you could market, and consider how large an audience the topic would have.  You can find a topic (affiliate marketers call it a “niche) with a little research.  You can find lessons on how to find a niche in Affilorama’s free lesson, Market Research for Affiliate Marketers.

Step 2: Find products to promote

Once you’ve decided on a niche, you’ll need to find some products to promote.  There are plenty of websites where you can find these (they’re called affiliate networks).  Later in this article, I’ll be showing you the process on how to find products to sell and get an affiliate link for them.  I’d also suggest Affilorama’s training, What Does Your Market Want?

Step 3:  Build a website

You’ll need a website.  Some people are very intimidated by this, but you needn’t be. It’s actually not hard.  I personally like to use WordPress because it’s user friendly and they make it easy for anyone to build a website.  You can learn how to build a website in programs like AffiloBlueprint from Affilorama.  I personally learned through the training at Wealthy Affiliate.  They taught me step-by-step, using easy-to-follow-videos, about how to build a website from scratch.  You can watch their video, How to Create a Website in under 30 seconds.

Step 4:  Fill your website with relevant content

Usually people create content by writing articles about their topic that will be interesting and helpful to their audience.  You talk about the products you’re promoting, and include pictures and your affiliate links.  If someone reads your article, clicks on the products you’re promoting and makes a purchase, you get commission!  If you aren’t a writer or don’t like to write, you can also create content using video, audio, podcasts.  There are lots of ideas out there about creating content for your website.  One of the best ways to get ideas for this is to search online about your topic yourself and see what others are offering.  You can also refer to Affilorama’s training on Content Creation.

Step 5:  Promote your website

What most people do not understand is that just creating a website isn’t enough.  If there’s no one visiting your website, then it might as well not exist.  Traffic is key to success in affiliate marketing.  The more people visiting your website, the more sales you’ll get.  There are a lot of different marketing strategies out there, from paid advertising to social media, to search engine optimization.  You won’t have to worry about this first thing…you have to complete the first 4 steps first.  But I personally have gotten the best getting-traffic advice by watching Mark Ling’s webinar, How to Get Website Traffic – 7 Sources Revealed.   (Seriously, if you’re serious about becoming a successful affiliate marketer, put it on your to-do list to watch this webinar).

Let’s Look at an Example

Step 1:  Pick a Topic

Let’s say, for example, that you’d like to make your website about weight loss.  There is a strong market available in the area of weight loss, but the trick is to target it to something specific.  Like, “how to lose belly fat,” or “how to lose weight without exercising.”  Get the idea?  Again,  you should follow the training at Affilorama I referred to earlier to pick a topic/niche.

Step 2:  Find products to promote

I’d head to an affiliate network website like Clickbank, and start browsing through the products available regarding weight loss.

Try to find a few products that you could see yourself promoting.  They should also fit certain criteria, like the specifics outlined in Affilorama’s lesson,  How to Choose an Affiliate Program.

Step 3:  Build a website

You’ll need to get a hosting provider, choose and purchase domain name (usually under $15), then decide on the website company you want to use (I prefer WordPress).  Again, I personally got my training to create websites at Wealthy Affiliate.  They will host up to two websites for you for free, and they’ll also give you training on how to get a domain name (the domain name means  I purchase my domains from Namecheap.

Step 4:  Fill your website with relevant content

To fill your website with relevant and valuable content, you can either write articles about weight loss yourself, or outsource this job to someone else.  You can also create content by making videos.  Look online in your niche and see what others are doing – the ideas for content will start to flow!

Step 5:  Promote your website

You can promote your website using SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which is free.  That’s a fancy way of saying I’d show search engines that my website is full of relevant information, so they’ll display it in the search results when people enter certain weight loss topics. Social Media is also free.  You might start by creating a Facebook page for your website and start looking at groups on Facebook who are interested in your topic (ie: weight loss).  When you gain more experience, you can also check into email marketing.  The ideas for getting traffic really are endless.

Affiliate Marketing for BeginnersOverwhelmed?  Don’t Be!

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re first learning about affiliate marketing because the process is new to most people.  But you do not have to do everything at once.  You take it one step at a time.  And with each step you complete, you build confidence to complete the next step, and the next step, and the next step.  That’s exactly how I did it, and I can tell you that’s exactly how any successful affiliate marketer has done it.  Like my mother always said, “You gotta start somewhere!”

If anything, after reading this article you now know that I’m not promoting any sort of scam. Scams offer a quick fix and “get rich quick” schemes that imply that you can press a few buttons and BAM!  you’re a millionaire.  You can see by what I’ve taught you so far that affiliate marketing takes work.  It’s a job, just like anything else.  Now granted, it happens to be a job where you can work at home in your jammies (insert my delighted grin…I’m writing this article sitting on my couch with  my  laptop, wearing fleece angel pajamas…I’m not kidding), but it is a job, nonetheless.

But if you’re willing to take the first step, follow simple, step-by-step training, and commit a few hours each week to building your new business, there’s no reason why you can’t be successful and have a solid income.  Especially with me here to help you along the way!

So don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to read and learn everything right away. It’s too much to take in all at once. The most important thing is to take the first step.

You can sign up for a free starter account with Affilorama.  They offer 100+ free affiliate marketing classes.  I personally prefer the video training provided by Wealthy Affiliate, because I really need to be shown stuff, you know?  But the training at Affilorama is really great too.  Check them both out and compare for yourself.  Choose what YOU like.

Affiliate Marketing for BeginnersFinally, you have the option of purchasing an affiliate marketing course like AffiloBlueprint (it’s $197).  You can read my review about this program HERE.  Honestly, if I had this to do over again, this is probably the route I would take.  Why?  Because it saves a ton of time.  It’s just faster.  Not free like the other options, but not thousands of dollars either.  Under 200 bucks, and fast.  I’m just sayin.  🙂
